How To Clean Pool Filter Sand

Step 1:
Purchase non-toxic Pool Filter Sand (silica sand)

Step 2:
Use a recycling bin or container large enough to hold all of your sand. Line the container with a plastic garbage bag. Once the sand has been cleaned it will be transfered into this container. If the sand is going directly into the aquarium, there is no need to use this container.

Step 3:
Fill a smaller bucket 50% with un-cleaned sand.

Step 4:
Fill the bucket containing uncleaned sand with water. The water will be cloudy with some foam. Continue filling with water, slightly tilt the bucket for the water to drain. Continuously mix the sand with your hand or a solid object to loosen up all debris. After approximately 5 minutes the water will appear clear. Drain the water the best you can and empty the clean sand into your tank, or bucket of cleaned sand.

CLOUDY WATER = DIRTY SAND

CLEAR WATER = CLEAN SAND

Step 5:
Drain the water once it is clear. Try to keep all the sand in the bucket. Leaving a small amount of water is fine.
Then, move the clean sand into the bin lined with a garbage bag, or directly into the aquarium if desired.

Step 6:
Repeat until all sand in cleaned. Transfer into aquarium.
Enjoy!!!
Note: These steps can also be used outside using a hose, rather than inside in a tub.
